Yurts in Idaho City, ID
A peaceful, remote, pet-friendly yurt in Idaho City, ID
In the middle of a global pandemic, I found myself on the couch, in pajamas, longing for some excitement, a little commotion and having an overpriced drink at a bar again.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the great indoors. My husband is the outdoorsy one in our marriage. He grew up camping, fishing and hiking his entire childhood. I was the exact opposite. In South Texas, we didn’t do too much outside, especially as kids. Primarily because our summers can, and usually, reach over 115 degrees. We learned to love the indoors and got creative – tents made out of sheets, movie nights and the Nintendo. My love for indoors, slightly transpired into my adult life.
I was surprised when I found myself, looking up an outdoor adventure that my husband and I could go on with our dog, that would still allow for social distancing.
Little did I know we would be taking social distancing to another level.
I stumbled upon Idaho City Yurts. They were on a reservation only basis, and with spots filling-up fast, I booked without giving it a second thought.
Love makes you do crazy things sometimes.
Whether you live in Idaho, are just visiting, or temporarily there (military spouses will get this) you must check this off your list. The yurt we stayed in was the Stargaze Yurt, which is pet-friendly.
I would consider the hike as intermediate to moderate. The distance from the parking lot to the yurt is almost 3 miles and with heavy backpacks, it can seem much longer. There are also steep inclines. Make sure to take as many breaks as you need and have quick access to your water bottle. Also be prepared to not have any cell service.
If you consider yourself a survivalist, like Allen does, you’ll know exactly what to bring: water, propane, snacks. Their website gives a detailed packing list and shows you what is included and what you’ll need.
However, somethings didn’t make the list which I think should be “essential.”
· Champagne
· Face wipes
· Flamin’ Hot Cheetos
· More snacks
· Bear Spray (No, we didn’t see any wildlife but you never know)
The rules are simple: leave it better than you found it and bring your garbage with you. I can honestly say that not having any cell service for a few days was refreshing and resetting.
On our last night there. I woke up to a gentle tap from Allen saying “P, listen.” It was a pack of wolves less than a mile from our yurt and it was an experience I never thought I would be so terrified but mesmerized by.
